Sarnia Officially Recognized as a Bird-Friendly City

Sarnia has joined a growing number of Canadian communities recognized for their commitment to protecting bird populations and creating bird-friendly environments. In December 2024, the city received an entry-level Bird Friendly City designation from Nature Canada, a milestone achieved with the support of local volunteers, City staff, and environmental advocates.

The certificate, now on public display at City Hall, affirms Sarnia’s place among 30 municipalities across the country working to reduce threats to birds and foster healthier habitats. The Bird Friendly City certification process looks at how well a municipality supports birds in three key areas:

  • Reducing threats such as light pollution and window collisions
  • Protecting and restoring habitat, with a focus on climate resiliency
  • Raising awareness through community outreach and education

Want to spot the Red-headed Woodpecker (our official city bird) in the wild? Keep an eye out in areas like Canatara Park and the Wawanosh Wetlands Conservation Area, where mature trees and natural habitats make excellent viewing spots for this striking species.

This designation is more than symbolic; it’s part of a broader effort to enhance Sarnia’s green spaces, promote biodiversity, and build a more connected and resilient community.
